AAC 2017 | INDIANS TOPS THE MEDALS TALLY ON DAY 1

Impressive start for the Indians at AAC 2017

Indians came up with quite a few surprising performances at the Kalinga Stadium on the opening day of the Asian Athletics Championship, 2017. Though hopes were high on Vikas Gowda & Annu Rani winning India the yellow medal in their respective events of Discus & Javelin Throw but the duo couldn't do better than Bronze. Just as the netizens started tweeting about dismal beginning for India, came a series of surprising Medal winning performances both from Track & Field.
Manpreet Kaur won India its first gold medal by triumphing in the women's shot put final, coming up with 18.28 m effort.

Women's High Jump saw a brace of Medals, with both Neena & Nayana winning the Silver & Bronze respectively.

But G. Lakshmanan's Gold in Mens 5000m is the most significant event on Day1. He thus qualified for the London World Championship with his powerful run. Sanjivani Jadhav's Bronze in Women's 5000m is another bright sign for India in the long distance running events.
India thus ended Day 1 with 7 Medals- 2 Golds(Courtesy Lakshmanan & Manpreet Kaur), 1 Silver(Courtesy Neena) & 4 Bronze (Courtesy Vikas, Sanjivani, Nayana & Annu Rani)


Below is the highlights of Indian Performances on Day 1 at AAC , 2017:


MEN'S EVENTS:

A)Men's High Jump- India's B. Chethan & Ajay Kumar qualify for the finals with identical highest jump of 2.10m

B)Me'ns Discus Throw- Vikas Gowda Bronze with highest throw of 60.81m
Kripal Singh finished 13th in the same event.

C)Men's 100m- Amiya Kumar Mallick finishes 10th in Prelims with timing of 10.48s & proceeds to the Semis.

D)Men's 400m- India's Arokia Rajiv topped Heats with 46.41. Anas Muhammed came 5th with 46.70 s & Amoj Jacob 8th with 47.09. All 3 made it to the semis. They continued their great run in the semis too. M.anas (45.48) Jacob (46.40) rajiv (46.41) qualify for final of 400m

E)Men's 1500m- India's Ajay Kumar Saroj topped Heats with timing of 3:51.37. Siddhanta Adhikari, the other Indian representative in this event came 8th with 3:57.46. Both qualified for the Finals.

F)Men's 5000m-G Lakshmanan wins Gold with timing of 14:54:58. Murli Kumar Gavit finished 6th.
Lakshmanan also qualified for London WC with this gold medal performance



WOMEN'S EVENTS:

A)Women's 100m Dutee Chand tops Heats with timing of 11.40s & proceed to Semis.

B)Women's 400m- All 3 Indians proceed to the Finals taking the top 3 positions in Heat in form of Nirmala Sheoran(52.79s), MR Poovamma(53.16s) & Jisna Mathew(53.18s)

C)Women's 1500m- India's Monika Chowdhury(4:26.25) finished 4th & PU Chitra(4:36.80) finished 8th overall in Prelims. Both qualify for the Finals

D)Women's 5000m-Sanjivani Jadhav wins Bronze with timing of 16:00:24 & L. Suriya finished 4th.

E)Women Long Jump- V. Neena wins Silver with highest jump of 6.54m & Nayana James wins Bronze with jump of 6.42m

F)Women's Shot put-Manpreet Kaur Wins Gold with highest throw of 18.28m. She is the only athlete to go above 18m. The other 2 Indians Anamika Das & Ramanpreet kaur finished 5th & 6th respectively.

G)Women's Javelin Throw-Annu Rani wins Bronze with highest throw of 57.32 m. The other Indians Poonam Rani & Suman Devi finished 8th & 10th respectively.
